About the Project

With community media practices going digital, there is an increased need to learn techniques and ways of creating good films/videos. Addressing that need, Drishti - a leading development communication organization based in Ahmedabad - has been working with several grassroot organization to build the capacities of the workers in creating films about their work.

This project looked at the training modules and aimed at creating a handy manual or handbook that trainees can use as their guide after the trainings are completed.

I was in the capacity of Design Consultant, and was responsible for creating the basic wireframes and the final output in coordination with a graphic designer and Drishti.

Process

The process of creating this handbook was participatory and collaborative, with consistent workshops and brainstorms with the Drishti team to understand the need and figuring out the content of the handbook.

Based on these conversations, a design language was arrived at, which was provided to the graphic designer, along with wireframes of the chapter. The content was then translated to Hindi to ensure accessibility and ease of understanding difficult technical concepts.

The final output was a handbook that outlines all the processes required for videography - pre-production processes, production and post-production.

A detailed write-up of the entire process can be found below.

PHASE 1: STRUCTURE OF THE HANDBOOK

Through several brainstorm sessions with the team of Drishti, a basic outline of the handbook was created keeping in mind the following objectives:

  • the handbook should be divided into sections that can assist the readers in understanding the entire process of videography - from research to post-production

  • it should consist of technical chapters, along with sections of guidance that would be in the form of tips

  • the structure should not be monotonous and should consist of various elements to keep the material engaging

This ideation board became the basis for the chapters of the handbook and the content for the same. All the content was first written in English, and after corrections was translated in Hindi. This was a long process, however, an important one as it is the base of the handbook.

PHASE 2: CREATING WIREFRAMES

The next stage was to create basic wireframes of a set of chapters to provide the team with a general idea of what the chapters would look like. This process helped us understand edits that needed to be made in the content, as well as the visual appeal of the handbook. Below are a few examples of the wireframes created.

PHASE 3: FINAL OUTPUT, IN COORDINATION WITH DESIGNER

Based on the wireframes, coordination processes with the graphic designer began to finalize the handbook. The design coordination was an essential process to ensure that both the client (which is team Drishti) as well the designer is able to be on the same page when it came to the finalization of the design. The design was finalized by designer Anuja Khokhani.

Below are the final designs of the wireframes shown above.
