About the Project

Radio Nazariya 107.8 FM is a community radio station based in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Conceived by Drishti, a human-rights media organization, Radio Nazariya showcases the stories of the people of Ahmedabad, through representation by the people themselves. The station covers a range of development issues While covering a range of development issues such as women empowerment, urbanization & employment, health and sanitation and is also a space for creative expressions of children and budding artists of the city. It is a platform to discuss, debate and critique on issues that matter to the city of Ahmedabad. I was a Programme Coordinator of the station for 4 years, from 2015 to 2019.

Roles and Responsibilities

NETWORKING AND BUILDING PARTNERSHIPS

  • Finding individuals, organizations and initiatives that work on different issues to collaborate with the radio station

  • Building networks and partnerships to ensure issues are represented on a wider scale

  • Conducting regular meetings with partners and collaborators to ensure feedback implementation

  • Creating regular reports based on the performance of the program(s) with the partners and collaborators

OVERSEEING PRODUCTION AND BROADCASTING

  • Mentoring and hand-holding producers with content creation processes - from inputs on research to structure of the program to script-writing

  • Conducting regular feedback sessions with producers to ensure progress and improvement in their performance

  • Assisting in other aspects of production - conducting interviews, sound-designing of audio content, voice over for narrative aspects of the show

DESIGNING AND CONDUCTING TRAINING IN RADIO SHOW PRODUCTION

  • Designing participatory training modules for new producers, with a focus on orienting them on the basics of production on social issues

  • Organizing and implementing training

  • Providing mentoring and hand-holding support to the new producers in the initial stages of their production journey

MARKETING AND FUND-RAISING DRIVES

  • Designing and conducting different types of marketing drives to promote the radio station, such as conducting road shows in the catchment areas of the station

  • Designing strategies and conducting fund-raising drives to ensure consistent remuneration of all producers and trainees

Reflection of the journey

Besides the managerial responsibilities, the station became a space of constant learning and growth. I met and interacted with people from varied backgrounds - this gave me the opportunity to question myself and the world around me, helping in building my perspectives around issues of social justice and human rights. The four years spent have become the foundation of many decisions I have taken as part of my professional career as well as in my personal life. 

Seeing the growth of the project today, and seeing how much of the initial failures have shaped the space today, brings me immense joy and pride. I will always remain grateful to the many producers, interns, volunteers, and partners that I had the opportunity to work with on different issues, constantly building my nazariya.
